Summer Camp Information
The camps listed below are all resident camps which means that children and adults can go there and usually stay anywhere from three days to all summer, each camp with its own schedule of how they run things.
Some places have a canned package which operates like a class of sorts, with the same group of children doing structured activities together for the duration.
Others are more unstructured where you can go anytime and choose among several activities throughout the day. Very, very few of these camps are exclusive.
Most will take you as long as you pay the fees. Even the cubs and scout camps take nonmembers.
Many of the children's camps have separate facilities for adult camps or retreats of sorts.
The nonprofit ones do this to engender a sense of brotherhood among people, some with a family focus, particularly the religious oriented and the YMCA camps.
The for profit ones do this to make money, so although you may find it surprising, the fact is that many of the children's summer camps also have camps for adults.
There are many day camps out there not listed here where the children go during the day but go home at night. Your local YMCA usually holds day camps as well as residential camps during the summer.
To find local sources of summer camps, you could try your local YMCA, YWCA, cubs and scouts, 4-H clubs, camp fire club, churches, Salvation Army and some service organizations.
If you're a handicapped person, your local and state support organizations should be able to fill you in on what camps are around such as a camp for diabetic kids, for kids in wheelchairs, kids with cerebal palsy, etc.

Some places, like the Salvation Army, have retreats where you can go visit year round.
The cheapest way for your child to go to summer camp is to join a local cadet corps in your area. They can be air cadets, army cadets or navy cadets. During the summer, they go away for camp for free and sometimes even get paid as I did by going to a six week summer camp in Canada as a Canadian army cadet.
They usually structure them for fun, adventure and some travel to an out of state military base where they take the cadets on regular tours.The way to find out if they have cadets in your area is to contact the regular or reserve force detachments and ask them about them.
Summer camp fees can be steep, up to several thousand dollars. Just like there is a class system in the real world, wealthy parents want to send their kids to high cost, exclusive camps so because there's a market, some very expensive camps are out there to cater to these people.
At the other end of the spectrum, even the service clubs which sponsor summer camps have to charge something, albeit a nominal fee, because they're very expensive to run with the food, employees, insurance and all.
For inexpensive options, consider local police departments, many of which sponsor youth clubs some of which have summer camps.
There's also the 4-H club, the Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA, the service clubs like Lions and Kiwanis and virtually every church has some connection to a summer camp somewhere.
Have your child together with you decide on the summer camp he or she wants to go to.
Some residential camps accept children as young as 7.
Traditional camps offer a wide range of activities, from athletics to crafts.
Some specialty camps are drama, music and sports.
Adventure camps take campers on hikes, bikes, horseback or canoe rides in parks or other outdoor sites.
Preschool camps are day programs for children ages 2 to 5.
Special-needs camps are for children with physical, mental or learning disabilities. Some camps combine children with and without special needs for all or part of the day.
Visit a camp when it's in session, even though that may require planning a year ahead of time. If you're unable to visit, talk to families whose children have attended the camp in the past. Some camps may give you the names of parents to contact.

Is there a refund policy?
What are the condition and safety of the facilities and equipment?
How is medical care handled?
What is the age range of the campers?
